      • Worth the Wait

Have you been looking for a truly beautiful rack to elevate your tablescape?

Please note that all items are listed "sold out" because they are made to order once your spot on the waitlist comes up. Please "order" the waitlist item to join the list (it's free).

        Notes on price and production:

Currently, each of my racks is handmade and finished by me, and therefore every set is unique. Please note that I do source harder-to-find sized wood for a more substantial and rustic beautiful rack and while I’ve been blessed to work with many wonderful clients who appreciate that heft and the natural imperfections, I also understand there is a space for machine-made perfection and mass production for a lower cost.

        This is not that space.

While I will work with you to make your racks feel personal (bring on the crazy ideas!) I will not use thinner, cheaper material, outsource, or promise to rid the wood of every sign of work (read some saw and chisel marks) and nature! I realize this pushes these products into a luxury price point but I truly believe there is something for everyone at each price level and I am an individual artist trying to sustainably get her creations out into the world.

        Notes on work and materials:

I want to emphasize that the point behind these beautiful racks is that they will show markings of nature, effort, and time. While polishing marble and buffing wood will make these excellent vehicles for your gorgeous tiles, I do expect natural materials to well... act naturally! Some woods lighten with time, have knots or cracks (sealed), and are uneven and require things like shims for brass feet to sit perfectly. Some marble will inevitably chip, scratch, and etch with time and use.

Some of these things are solid and substantial, some are delicate and dainty.

This juxtaposition creates a beautiful tablescape, but a perfectly imperfect one. There are creators using laser cutting and 3D printers to make perfect copies of racks that will pass any inspection. There is nothing wrong with that sort of production. There is something wrong with wanting that sort of production for my types of products. Please know yourself and what you like best so we can both end up blissfully happy at our Mahjong tables!

        Notes on timelines:

I feel incredibly humbled and excited that there has been a good response to my creations.

I also feel incredibly dedicated to several facets of my life including my family, friends, and day job.

        Yes, the waitlist is long.

No, I am so sorry but I cannot give you an estimate of when I will get to you.

Yes, I can promise it'll be a blast when I do get to you. I've loved working with and getting to know each custom client.

I TOTALLY understand if by the time I get to you, you have moved on. We all have to live our lives to the best of our mahjong accessory-acquiring abilities!

I appreciate each and every one of you.

      • FAQs

        It's all in the details

I have NEVER played at all. Should I try to watch videos or read anything prior to our 101 or 1:1 lesson?

No! I love teaching “from scratch” and everything will make more sense in context. Do not worry.

I am hosting. What do I need to do to prepare?

It’s your party/lesson, have fun with it! Many people like to pick a theme or glam it up, but laid back lessons and PJ parties are equally fun. I will bring any needed Mahjong items, you need to provide an appropriate table per each group of 4 players. It is also helpful to let me know what type of group it is- girlfriends, family/kids, etc.

        How should I time food/drinks?

Many people choose to have food and drinks. Munch and Mahj is very dear to my heart. I do suggest that if you are going to eat a full dinner or heavy appetizers that you do it PRIOR to the time of the lesson. Mahj and merlot pair well together, but it is too difficult to eat a full meal while engaging! I will try to be flexible, but my time will start once set up is done and I’d hate for people to miss out while still eating.

Everything I see online is preppy plaids and trendy jewelry. What if I want to play, but that is not my vibe?

No problem. I love in-home lessons because they should be about how you and your friends are the most comfortable and have the most fun. I wear cute (clean) scrubs to most lessons (MahjMamaMD of course), but when I host my own friends we are often in laid back athleisure.

What if I AM paisley perfection and that IS the mood I am going for?

No problem. I can dig. Let me (and maybe your guests) know the vibe. I promise I'll wear my preppiest scrubs:)

What if I am super nervous that I won't be able to eat, learn, chat, have fun, etc. all at once during a 101? Or... I tried a 101 and missed a lot. What are my options?

Honestly, that is ok! Mahjong is about togetherness and community and it can be fun, even if a little overwhelming, to learn with friends. I do my best with all learning styles, but it is also ok to book more than one 101 with friends or consider a Solo Mahj Session.

What if I am unsure which Mahj lesson level I need now? Like if I feel in between 101 and 102 or 102 and Masters?

I am happy to chat about that, but the best advice I can give is that someone booking a 102 should, in theory, be able to start/play a game of Mahjong on their own even if they are unsure if they are doing it well- they should know how to deal, Charleston, begin to pick a line, etc. They may feel super unsure of how to pick a line well or unsure of finer rules about joker exchanges and formalities like "dead hands". If you took 101 but just missed some of this (or took 101 +wine and had a blast but are unsure) then just book a 101 for the additional time and fact that I'll probably need to re-review a lot of the game even if we don't start from scratch! You will be confidently on to 102 after that! 102 sessions should be you playing multiple games and me walking around and guiding (line consult anyone?) and answering questions re rules or play process. It doesn't mean I won't re-teach some! Masters means you feel smooth with all parts of the game and want to level up and kick some Mahj butt.

Can you get me discounts now that you have caused me to be obsessed with this game?

YES! The code MAHJMAMAMD will get you 10% off at a growing number of places and I would love for you to use it!

        Do you teach kids/family lessons?

I do! I am used to teaching kids of all ages in work and life. I still use the NMJL card and teach real American Mahjong, so I recommend a developmental age of at least 10-12 for kids to learn along with you.

Do you teach at open plays or larger events?

I do not right now as I really enjoy smaller group teaching, but I am always happy to entertain great ideas.

What if you are booked up but I am DYING to do this?

Let me know. I love my own mahj crew (not to mention my family and other friends), so I try to limit my nights out teaching, but I could potentially add them back depending on my schedule (and kids' sports:). Someone may also cancel, I may be bribeable to be flexible, anything is possible:)

What if I don't have a group of 4 or someone cancels?

No worries, I can still teach to a smaller group, but you will need to pay the minimum stated table price for booked lesson type.

What if I need to cancel entirely?

Please try to cancel as early as possible, a week in advance is preferable. I do understand that things happen, so keep me posted! Right now I'm trying not to impose any fee for this, but that could change depending on how frequently it happens.

What if you have to cancel on me?

Then something big happened and I will work with you to reschedule ASAP.

        Are you all-wise and all-knowing?

Heck no! I am still learning finer points and still interact with women who have played for years and continue to learn about the game. If I don't know something though, I know where to find the answer!

        Other important things to note:

        • I will charge for anyone who is watching the lessons. This doesn’t mean a kid or hubby can’t wander in or out, but for any significant looky-lous, they count!
        • I do reserve the right to leave/end any lesson that makes me uncomfortable (which is pretty hard to do). I am all about spreading the mahjong and spreading the love and I have no desire to engage with or teach groups who are peddling the hate.
        • I will give out material to keep for your learning, but do ask that you don’t duplicate/reproduce/photo it in any manner.
        • I will ask if it is ok to take a couple photos of the fun and make sure I get permission to use on the gram if that is ok.
        • I will have an affiliate link with a discount available to anyone interested at the event. There is no pressure to do so!
        • By booking a lesson with me, I will assume that you have read to and agree with all of the above information.

Please reach out with any further questions!

      • About Me

I wanted to play Mahj.... but I am a full time working doctor mom.

While my schedule is not nearly as bad as many MDs, I could not make it to the daytime lessons and open plays (not to mention they were intimidating). So, naturally, I made my sister teach me!
Fast forward through the obsessions with the gorgeous aesthetics (the tiles, the mats, the racks... you'll see what I mean), and reading every rule book I could get my hands on, and I was forcing my friends to learn so that we could all play together.
I teach a lot during my day job (to learners of all levels) and I realized while showing my girlfriends that I really enjoyed this new teaching avenue! Hence, @MAHJMAMAMD was born to spread the Mahj love and knowledge. Next, I realized how much I enjoyed putting my DIY and design skills to use and started building racks. The rest is history!
